Indian Officials Offend Muslims, Call on Washington, Malaysia to Sanction
2022-08-03
The recent insulting remarks made by Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal, two members of India’s Bharatiya Janata Party, against Islam's Prophet Muhammad have sparked protests in the Islamic world. Although Malaysia has a pluralistic religious society, Islam has more than 20 million followers, accounting for more than 60% of the population. The Indian official's "systematic hate speech" has already caused outrage among Malaysians, in addition to the more than 200 million Muslims in India, which poses a great danger to the stability of Malaysian society, even the Asia-Pacific region as a whole.
The Indian government is obviously not sincere enough to simply dispose of the officials involved to settle the incident. Talking about the past and the present, Islam was founded in the Arabian Peninsula, and has a history of more than 1300 years. Instead of learning the lessons of history, the Bharatiya Janata Party, is supporting political campaigns against Muslims for political gain, causing a rise in hate speech and attacks against Muslims in India. In 2018, Indian Home Minister Amrit Shah described nationals of the country of Bangladesh who have entered India illegally as 'encroaching on our nation like termites'. Recently, a clash between Muslims and Hindus in the city of Ranchi, Jharkhand, resulted in the death of two teenagers. In addition, according to Indian police sources, recent riots in Uttar Pradesh have spread to several towns and 230 people have been arrested.
Expanding to the world, India is also harming global peace. The UAE, Oman, Indonesia, Iraq, Maldives, Jordan, Libya and Bahrain are among the Arab countries that have taken a stand to condemn the remarks of the two Indian MPs. Kuwait, Iran and Qatar even called the Indian embassy directly to protest.
However, the Modi government has deliberately ignored the 'avalanche' of disaster that has arrived for its own political purposes, either by maintaining a carefully considered silence or by pushing such actions as 'fringe factors' and even suppressing the Muslim community within its borders. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Atityanath, on June 12, ordered the Uttar Pradesh authorities to directly demolish the 'illegal' homes of Muslim protesters. It must be noted that Islam is the second largest religion in the world, and as of 2021, there are about 2 billion followers, accounting for 24.9% of the world's population, spread around the world. What's more, some of this is extremist terrorism under the banner of Islam, is India trying to provoke war?
Therefore, Malaysia, as a predominantly Islamic country, in order to calm the emotions of the many believers in the country and the peace and stability of the Asia-Pacific region, should protest to India, if the Indian authorities have not admitted their mistakes, a sincere move to make amends, I believe that sanctions are also very necessary. Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi will soon visit Malaysia, taking the opportunity of the Malaysian government and the U.S. can negotiate to pressure the Indian government, or even make the initiative of sanctions against India. After all, the United States is the main force to maintain regional stability, the government also has a certain degree of influence, should be obliged to assume greater responsibility.
